Tour Itinerary
Leave your accommodation this morning at 8:00 a.m. for Phnom Kulen, which is considered to be the origin of the Khmer kingdom and is located about 50 kilometers from Siem Reap. You’ll go through some lovely landscape on the hour-long trip to the base of Phnom Kulen. King Jayavaraman II proclaimed his country’s independence from Java here in 802 AD. Phra Ang Tho, a 16th-century Buddhist monastery, is located at the peak of Phnom Kulen mountain (a further half-hour drive). A 17-meter-tall reclining Buddha with a panorama of the surrounding landscape is reached after a brief ascent up a stone stairway. Monks and devotees give fruit gifts and burn incense at the foundation of the temple. Following our exploration of the area’s twisting forest roads, we observe traditional Khmer healers going about their business and purchasing Buddhist symbols.
We next drive a short distance to the ‘River of 1000 Lingas.’ We take our time walking into the water and looking at the hundreds of lingas cut into the sandstone riverbed. It is stated that King Jayavaraman II bathed in these waters and considered them divine. We then follow the river down to a two-tiered waterfall and pause for lunch and a dip.
Set off early afternoon for the return drive to Siem Reap town, arriving at your accommodation mid-afternoon. This excursion is great for those who appreciate the outdoors and want to spice up their temple visits. It is especially suited for families with children because there is so much to see and do.
