Tour Itinerary
Today, we took a trip to some of the most fascinating temples outside of Angkor Thom. Around 8 a.m., you leave your hotel and make your first visit to Pre Rup Hindu Temple, which was constructed as the royal temple of the Khmer monarch Rajendravarman and dedicated in 961 or early 962. It is a temple mountain that is built out of sandstone, laterite, and brick.
Drive on to see the beautifully maintained and artistically carved Banteay Srei. The intricate reliefs on this little sandstone building are thought to be the best and most expertly made in Cambodia. Since the Khmer Rouge fled the area in the late 1990s, Banteay Srei has just recently been reachable.
Return your journey and proceed to Preah Khan temple, a deserted yet eerily evocative collection of tree roots and decaying stone buildings. Neak Pean temple is a manmade island with a Buddhist temple on a circular island in Jayatataka Baray. In honor of his father, the famous “temple builder” Jayavaraman VII ordered the construction of this site. Visiting this little site offers an intriguing counterpoint to the larger Angkor Wat. Preah Khan is being repaired by the World Monument Fund and is in surprisingly good shape in several areas. After a fantastic day of adventure, return to town in the late afternoon.
